However, you must be able to handle pressure and thrive in a fast-paced environment. There are a variety of options available for those who work in sales. Here are a few of them explained in more detail:
- Account Manager
Starting salary: £18,000 approx rising to £34,000 with experience
Where could it lead? An Account Manager could lead to a job as an Account Director with salaries up to £50,000.
A lot of Account Manager roles require you to be a graduate but you could progress through a junior sales role. You must have great negotiation skills, be able to manage budgets, be self-motivated, confident and work well under pressure. This role requires you to liaise with clients, listening to their requirements and communicating to others, put together proposals and dealing with any issues that might arise. Good business acumen is beneficial.
- Sales Manager
Starting salary: £20,000 approx rising to £40,000 with experience
Where could it lead? A Sales Manager could lead to a Sales Director role with salaries up to £70,000.
A Sales Manager will normally progress from another sales role at an executive or account management level. It is not necessary to have qualifications although business management qualifications could give you an advantage. The role normally involves organising a team to keep them motivated and reaching their targets. The job could also include training members of the team, setting goals, and could involve account management too. It is important that you have the right skills to keep your team motivated through excellent communication. Confidence and an ability to work under pressure is also important.
- Recruitment Consultant
Starting salary: £16,000 approx rising to £35,000 with experience.
Where could it lead? A Recruitment Consultant could eventually lead to a Recruitment Manager role with salaries up to £40,000.
Previous sales experience is an advantage to entering the recruitment sector, but many times people start as a trainee and work their way up. This role would suit someone with excellent negotiation skills, who is a confident communicator and has a professional attitude. If you thrive on targets and don’t mind pressure then this is the role for you. In this role you will work with businesses to help them fill their vacancies with the right candidate. You could be involved in winning new business, posting job ads, searching for CVs, screening of candidates before putting them forward for interview, liaising during interview stage, providing feedback, letting candidates know the outcome and negotiating contracts and agency fees.
