Role
Lead the successful delivery of complex water and wastewater commissioning projects from design through to handover.
Our Client has a requirement for a Commissioning Engineer, who will be required to work on a contract basis in Hertfordshire or Surrey.
Role Purpose:
- Provide full lifecycle commissioning input (design through to handover)
- Develop commissioning plans and procedures
- Undertake hands-on commissioning activities
- Conduct FAT/SAT and manage defect close-out
- Coordinate installation and commissioning activities, including third-party engineers
- Ensure quality, snag-free installation and commissioning delivery
- Deliver training to client operations and maintenance teams
- Apply structured commissioning approaches with understanding of water/wastewater processes
- Perform troubleshooting and apply analytical problem-solving
- Ensure consistent technical delivery and application of best practice, technical bulletins, and lessons learned
Job Role Responsibilities:
- Monitor supply chain performance against KPIs/KPMs and drive improvement
- Promote and implement SHEQ behavioural improvement initiatives
- Liaise with design teams, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure successful equipment setup and commissioning
- Verify equipment is FAT tested and snag-free prior to site delivery
- Produce timely reports for senior management
- Contribute to and manage inputs to the overall project programme
- Ensure capture and documentation of installation, testing, and commissioning data
- Witness installation and commissioning activities, including subcontractor testing
- Support Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) through site surveys and system reviews
- Contribute to client reports and management briefings
- Review and interpret electrical/mechanical schematics, FDS, P&IDs; initiate design changes where required
- Manage process and M&E design, scope, and programme changes; provide weekly updates
- Oversee commissioning and systems integration activities across the project lifecycle
- Configure and calibrate analytical equipment; integrate with monitoring systems
- Provide progress and status reporting to the Core Management Team
- Review and approve RAMS for commissioning activities
- Supervise and inspect subcontractor installations, ensuring compliance with quality standards and ITPs
- Manage installation activities and produce documentation for project close-out
- Lead Factory and Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT) in line with ITPs
- Coordinate commissioning plans and ensure completion of all associated documentation
- Deliver training to operations teams on new process plant and equipment
- Act as front-line supervisor during commissioning and installation phases
- Ensure safe, compliant, and timely delivery of commissioning activities
- Undertake either an electrical AP or mechanical AP role subject to assessment and training
- Undertake a front-line supervisor role subject to assessment and training
Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications:
- Experience with a main contractor working on Water and Wastewater Process Engineering projects
- HNC / Degree qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline or engineering apprenticeship & NVQ with experience of engineering in a multi-discipline environment
- Professional registration & membership is an advantage
- Knowledge of the commissioning & installation processes of electrical and mechanical contractors
- Proven skills on installation & commissioning projects through to handover
- Knowledge of Standards, Safety Rules and Statutory Legislation required on projects
- ≥3 years’ experience preferably in a commissioning role in the Water Industry
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a team environment, although must be able to self-manage
- Demonstrate ability to challenge and deliver value engineering solutions
- ECS (CSCS) card required
- Water Hygiene card required
- SSSTS or SMSTS required
- BS7671 18th Edition required
- First Aid at Work required
- CompEx Qualifications preferred
