First sponsor student braving the elements in aid of charity

02 Dec 2015

Over the Easter break, 24 Loughborough Students headed to temperatures of -26oC with the aim to complete a 200km dog sled expedition across the Arctic Circle. Ranging from Fresher’s to Postgraduates, the intrepid explorers headed to Alta, Norway, the northernmost town in the world where they began their adventure. Over 8 days each student had their own team of Huskies to look after, as well as staying at camps with no running water or electricity – it made a traditional cup of English tea so much more satisfying having to drill through 3 foot of ice to get water!

One night saw the group sleep out in a tent, had lunch on Europe’s largest frozen lake, and dog sledding through technically very difficult terrain. With some days of terrible weather, the group really learned how harsh life can be in such a remote area over 400 miles inside the Arctic Circle.

Expedition Leader Ally McDonald from Loughborough Students Union Said.

“The group really faced some tough challenges; bad weather, some tracks that felt more like toboggan runs and just surviving up to 9 hours a day on a dog sled. It’s so hard to explain just how hard it is to try and control a team of huskies, whilst protecting yourself from the cold, and looking after your team mates around you. Living without running water or electricity was a great experience for everyone – even if we were a bit smelly by the end of the week! They were hugely impressive and they all should be so proud of what they have achieved.”

Laura Wilkinson, a first year Mathematics student loved every second;

“Norway was such a fantastic experience! I learnt so much about the Sami people's way of life, especially the dogs through sledding! The Northern lights were incredible and the Ice Hotel stunning, not to mention the surreal feeling of being in such a remote and beautiful place. A special week that I will never forget with a bunch of really lovely people”

Jimmy McKeon commented on the trip, he said;

"The trip was perfect, everything I could have wanted from the week and more. The scenery, dogs and people were amazing, it challenged me and I learned a lot about myself. I couldn't have done it without the support of my friends, family and especially my sponsors First Recruitment Group."
