This role is highly challenging and pressured and so would suit someone who is calm under pressure. When a pipeline fails it is an expensive task to get it fixed and so needs to be right first time. The smallest mistake can be devastating if undetected. This role is normally based indoors in an office working extensively on computer design packages, later in the project cycle there could be site based or offshore work supporting the construction and commissioning.

What kind of tasks does this role involve?

A Pipeline Engineer works within the Oil & Gas industry and is responsible for designing, building and commissioning onshore and offshore pipelines. They will be responsible for designing the pipeline, analysing external factors such as temperature and pressure, deciding on the most suitable materials to be used and construction. They will also be involved in the testing and commissioning aspects before the pipeline can be used.

Progression and salary

This is a role that can grow and grow with experience. Typically candidates will need a degree or post grad qualification in engineering to become a Pipeline Engineer. You could then achieve a starting salary of £30,000 rising eventually to £70,000 with experience.
