Senior Human Factors Engineer

  • Rate: Negotiable
  • Contract Length: 12 months, Inside IR35
  • Location: Fully remote with occasional visits to Devonport Site, Plymouth

  

About the Role:

  • We are seeking a Senior Human Factors Engineer to join the Facility Readiness (Defuel) nuclear safety team at HMNB Devonport, a key strategic partner to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Royal Navy. In collaboration with Babcock, we are at the forefront of developing the future 'in-dock' disposal facility for out-of-service submarines.
  • As a Senior Human Factors Engineer, you will play a crucial role in preparing Human Factors Substantiation Reports (HFSRs), including the development of Fault Trees, calculation of Initial Human Error Probability (I-HEP), and input to Verification & Validation (V&V) activities supporting commissioning. This position involves engagement with wider safety and site teams to integrate Human Factors into the Defuel project, pioneering a new process at Devonport.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Fault Trees for Human Factors Substantiation Reports (HFSRs)
  • Calculate Initial Human Error Probability (I-HEP) considering Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs) and Error Producing Conditions (EPCs)
  • Provide Human Factors input to Verification & Validation (V&V) activities supporting commissioning
  • Engage with safety and site teams to integrate Human Factors into the Defuel project
  • Requirements:
  • Degree in Engineering or Scientific discipline (or relevant knowledge and experience)
  • Background in nuclear/radiological safety highly beneficial
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartered status
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal/written communication
  • Previous experience in Human Factors work, including the use of Human Factors related software for assessment of Ergonomics/Anthropometrics/Human Error Probability

Additional Information:

  • May involve working in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation, requiring enhanced security and regular screening checks
  • SC clearance required (BPSS clearance acceptable, but must be eligible for SC clearance)
  • Cannot have worked outside the UK in the past 5 years
