Role outline:
Acting as key member in the ESHW (Environment, Health, Safety and Wellbeing) function, the Safety Specialist will support the Head of ESHW in delivering health and safety expertise, in a construction setting, to the programme.
The role will involve leading in site based health and safety assurance activities on behalf of the Client organisation in line with relevant legislation, industry standards and client policies, procedures and guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring that company strategies, policies and management system requirements for conventional health & safety are communicated and understood.
- Maintaining and promoting high standards in Safety, Health, Environment, Security and Quality.
- Manages / reviews the technical development and production of health & safety documentation for a project and/or portfolio.
- Support to the local ESH Improvement Plans (culture, communications, etc.).
- Progressing on associated Operational / Assurance Functional Excellence Plans (FEP), Key Performance Indicators (KPI) etc. facilitating progress, as appropriate, to needs, accountabilities and responsibilities.
- Contributing to processes / tools that assess performance of the development and use of safety activities and Licence Condition compliance and identify where improvements could be made.
- Promoting learning and improvement through operational briefings, toolbox talks and presentations.
- Coaching others in safety (general / industrial / nuclear safety and other major hazards) approaches and techniques.
- Provides technical input to the production of policy, guidance and strategy.
- Maintains a proactive regulatory interface with all internal and external regulators / stakeholders.
Technical competencies:
- Extensive experience in the field of general/industrial/nuclear/explosives safety.
- Experience in a nuclear, high hazard and / or highly regulated industry.
- Experience of several Domains (Management system, Front End, Project design, Commissioning, Operations, Decommissioning), gained within complex or high hazard projects is highly desirable.
- Investigation and inspection techniques.
- Customer service related tasks and duties.
- Evidence of effective team working
- Good knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation.

Qualifications & experience:
- Past experience supporting complex projects is essential
- Level 5 Qualification e.g. NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice, NEBOSH Diploma or BSC Diploma or equivalent
- IOSH grade of CMIOSH or GradIOSH (working toward CMIOSH)
- Experience of nuclear or high secure sectors desirable
- SC Security clearance is essential DV security is desirable
The programme is in a highly secure site and will require successful candidates to work in live and strictly controlled environments that are operating at the highest levels of safety and security.
Due to the Client security requirements, candidates must be a UK National and will need to progress through security clearance with a willingness to achieve DV level.
